Demographics
There were 6,143,600 internet users in Austria (representing 74.8% of the population) in June 2011, according to Internet World Stats. (Internet World Stats, August 2011)
Of Europe's 372 million unique visitors, Austria accounted for 4.7 million unique visitors during August 2011, according to comScore. Users in Austria spent an average of 13.8 hours online in the past month, consuming 1,513 pages online. (comScore, October 2011)
74% of persons aged 16 to 74 in Austria used the internet during the three months prior to a survey conducted by STATISTICS AUSTRIA. Besides communication and information search the Internet is popular for using e-Government services. More than half of all persons (51%) had interacted with public authorities via the internet during the twelve months prior to the time of the survey (e.g. for information search on public authorities' websites, for downloading official forms or for sending filled in forms via the internet). In the last 5 years from 2005 to 2010 the growth amongst 60-69 year olds is 90% and for the over 70 year olds a massive 170%. The average growth for all internet users for this period was 26%. Even though the share of internet users amongst the seniors (60-69 years: 59%; 70 years plus: 27%) remains noticeably below the average for the general population, it is this target group, above all, who are able to claim the highest growth rates.
77% of Austrians over the age of 14 years used the internet in the 4th quarter of 2010, according to results from the GfK Online Monitor. Even though the dynamic developments of the early years of the internet are a thing of the past, in the last five years the use of the internet has increased by 16%, from 61% in 2005 to 77% in 2010.
Amongst the very young groups, in particular, the internet has achieved almost total coverage. 98% of the 14-19 year-olds use the internet and amongst the 20-29 year-olds the figure is 95%. 83% of the 14-19 year-olds and 73% of the 20-29 year-olds even make use of the internet almost every day. 2.8 million people in Austria aged between 16 and 74 years old have already bought goods or services via the internet during the twelve months prior to the survey, according to the results of the survey "ICT usage in households 2011" by Statistics Austria. This represented 45% of the Austrian population.
Compared to 2003, this is an increase of 34% points. The most popular product groups for internet shoppers were clothes and sporting goods, holiday accommodation or other travel arrangements as well as books, magazines and newspapers. (Statistics Austria, October 2011)
Broadband Access
72% of the Austrian households used a broadband connection to access the internet in 2011, according to the results of the survey "ICT usage in households 2011" by Statistics Austria. In 2003, only 10% of the households used such a connection. (Statistics Austria, October 2011)
