Demographics

There were 2,244,400 internet users in Croatia (representing 50.1% of the population) in June 2011, according to Internet World Stats. (Internet world Stats, August 2011)


In the first quarter of 2010, Croatians used the internet mostly for obtaining information on goods and services (80%), for sending electronic mail (73%) and for reading daily news and magazines (70%), according to the Croatian Bureau of Statistics' Survey on usage of information and communication technologies (ICT) in households and by individuals 2010.  

There was a decrease of 10% compared to the previous year in the internet usage for educational purposes and for seeking of health-related information. A relatively low share of the usage of e-banking and e-government services shows that the usage of on-line services was still not widespread.

In 2010, there was a noticeable increase in internet users among all age groups except among pensioners in the eldest age group.

Internet users by age, first quarter of 2010:
- 16-24: 92%
- 25-34: 84%
- 35-44: 73%
- 45-54: 47%
- 55-64: 22%
- 65-74: 6%

Internet users by employment status, first quarter of 2010:
- Pupils and students: 98%
- Employed: 74%
- Retired: 41%
- Others: 16%

Access

Households in the Republic of Croatia were still relatively poorly equipped with ICT in 2010, according to the Croatian Bureau of Statistics' Survey on usage of information and communication technologies (ICT) in households and by individuals 2010. 

57% of households in the country had internet access in the first quarter of 2010. This was up from 50% in 2009. (Croatian Bureau of Statistics, February 2011)

 

eCommerce

Only 14% of individuals in Croatia purchased goods or services via the internet during the last year (an increase of 4% as compared to 2009) as reported in the first quarter of 2010, according to the Croatian Bureau of Statistics' Survey on usage of information and communication technologies (ICT) in households and by individuals 2010.  The most popular categories of products/services bought online were very similar to those recorded in the previous year: books, magazines and educational material, together with clothes and sport equipment. Online travel market

Travel booking

12% of online shoppers in Croatia purchased travel and accommodation services as reported in the first quarter of 2010, according to the Croatian Bureau of Statistics' Survey on usage of information and communication technologies (ICT) in households and by individuals 2010. Another 12% indicated purchasing tickets for events online. (Croatian Bureau of Statistics, February 2011)

 

Broadband access

68% of online households in Croatia have access to the internet via broadband, according to the Croatian Bureau of Statistics' Survey on usage of information and communication technologies (ICT) in households and by individuals 2010.  This was an increase of 5% compared to the previous year. In parallel, there has been a decrease in the number of households using a dial-up access, from 12% to 7%, while the share of households using the cable internet significantly increased, from 5% to 21%, as compared to the previous year.
