Demographics
There were 4,970,700 internet users in Germany (representing 46.2% of the population) in June 2011, according to Internet World Stats. (Internet world Stats, August 2011)
44.4% of individuals in Greece accessed the internet in the first quarter of 2010, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority. This was up from 28.9% in 2006.
In the first quarter of 2010, internet users are mainly men aged 25-34 years old of medium educational level, that is, graduates of secondary education and of vocational training institutes.
70% of the respondents used the internet on a daily basis, while 91.9% made regular use -at least once a week- but not every day.
Rapid growth of internet access is observed in the Aegean Islands and Crete (growth rate of 24%, compared to 2009), as well as in Central Greece with 22%, while decrease 12,9% is recorded in North Greece and relative stability in Attica.
People are using the internet for an increasing number of different activities. Just as in previous year, information search and on-line services head the list of internet activities (93.4%). 9 out of 10 internet users (having used the internet in the first quarter of 2010) searched information about goods and services, while 8 out of 10 used the internet for communication purposes. Almost 1 in 2 households (46.4%) had internet access at home in Greece in the first quarter of 2010, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority.

eCommerce
18.4% of internet users shopped online in Greece during April 2009-March 2010, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority. Yet, the comparison between the percentage change (13.6%) for 2009-2010, and the respective percentage (18.2%), for the period 2008-2009, reflects the fact that the Greeks express a discomfort for online shopping. The average annual rate of change for purchases over the internet for the five-year period from 2006 to 2010 comes to 20.8%.
The goods and services purchased or ordered over the internet for personal use during April 2009-March 2010, were mostly electronic equipment, i.e. cameras and video cameras, mobile phones, television sets, DVDs, etc (28.5%), travel services such as tickets, car renting, etc (27.8%) and clothes, footwear- sportswear (24.5%). 27.8% of online shoppers in Greece purchased travel arrangements (such as tickets, car hire etc.) online during April 2009-March 2010, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority. The percentage reached 23.3% for holiday accommodation (hotel room, apartment, etc.), and 20.1% for tickets for events (concerts, theatre, cinema, etc.). TripAdvisor quietly launched two new country sites in November 2010 - Greece and Russia - as it continues its gradual expansion across the globe.
The two new European sites - TripAdvisor.com.gr and TripAdvisor.ru - are the first new ones on the continent since a concerted expansion programme in 2008 and 2009. It brings the number of individual country sites on the TripAdvisor to 25.
A TripAdvisor official says the next major launch will be for the Indonesian market, probably later in November 2010. This will be the first significant launch in the region since former-European managing director Marc Charron uprooted from his London base to set up an office for TripAdvisor in Singapore.

The number of internet connections via mobile phone has increased by approximately 58% in the first quarter of 2010, compared to the previous year, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority. On the other hand, there was a large decrease (about 40%) for internet access from hot spots.
According to the survey results, internet access via mobile or smart phone is predominantly a male habit (68.8%). More specifically, these users are men having completed medium educational level, mainly aged 16 - 24 years old.
