Demographics

There were 301,600 internet users in Iceland (representing 97.6% of the population) in June 2010, according to Internet World Stats. This was up by 79.5% compared to 2000. (Internet World Stats, June 2010)


Use of computers and the internet is very widespread among individuals in Iceland, according to the results of Statistics Iceland's eighth survey on the use of ICT and the internet by Icelandic households and individuals conducted.

In 2009, 93% of the population aged 16-74 years had used the internet in the previous three months. Nine out of every ten internet users send emails, and 78% read online newspapers or magazines. Three out of every four internet users use the web to obtain information from public authorities' websites, and a vast majority of those find it easy to find this information. Access

The vast majority of Icelandic households have a computer and access to the internet, according to the results of Statistics Iceland's eighth survey on the use of ICT and the internet by Icelandic households and individuals.  In 2009, 90% of the households had access to the internet. eCommerce

For the first time since the survey started in 2002, there is a drop in the percentage of people doing internet commerce in Iceland, according to the results of Statistics Iceland's eighth survey on the use of ICT and the internet by Icelandic households and individuals.  In 2009, 90% of the households had access to the internet. Those who do shop online are not as likely to buy travel tickets and accommodation as in previous years.

In 2009, 29% of internet users in Iceland aged 16-74 years had ordered goods or services over the internet in the previous three months.
