Demographics

There were 2,103,471 internet users in Lithuania (representing 59.5% of the population) in June 2011, according to Internet World Stats. (Internet world Stats, August 2011)
64% of the population aged 16-74 in Lithuania used the internet in the ifrst quarter of 2011, according to the Lithuanian Department of Statistics. This was up from 60% in 2010.

Internet access in the first quarter of 2011 by age group:
TOTAL: 63.6%
- 16-24 years old: 96.3%
- 25-34 years old:  88.5%
- 35-44 years old: 71.8%
- 45-54 years old: 56.4%
- 55-64 years old: 36.1%
- 65-74 years old:: 11.4%

The majority (75%) of internet users used the internet daily while one in five (21%) use the internet at least once a week but not daily.So 96% of internet users are regular internet users (i.e. using the internet daily or at least once a week); this represents 61% of the population aged 16-74.

92% of internet users access the internet at home; while 24% of users use their mobile devices to connect at least occasionally to the internet.

The internet was used mostly to access news/newspapers/magazines; to get in touch with other people, search for information. (Statistics Lithuania, August 2011)


Access

56% of households in Lithuania had internet access in the first quarter of 2011, according to the Lithuanian Department of Statistics. This represented a 1% increase compared to the previous year. The percentage reached 64% in cities areas and 41% in rural areas. 

The majority (74%) of households without internet access at home indicated that they do not need it. Other important reasons for not using the internet at home included expensive equipment (15%); high service prices (15%), do not have the necessary skills (9.5%); and access to the internet elsewhere (6.3%). Broadband Access

The majority (93%) of households with home internet access in Lithuania in the first quarter of 2011, used broadband connections, according to the Lithuanian Department of Statistics. The level reached 95% in cities area and 86% in rural areas. (Statistics Lithuania, August 2011)

 

eCommerce

11% of the population aged 16-74 (up from 7% in 2010) or 16% of internet users used the internet in the first quarter of 2011 to purchase goods and services online, according to the Lithuanian Department of Statistics  

Over the past 12 months, almost one in four internet users purchased goods or services online. The internet was mostly used for buying tickets to cultural events (38%); Clothing/footwear/sporting goods (37%); telecommunications services (23%); holiday accommodation (12%).
