There were 424,500 internet users in Luxembourg (representing 84.3% of the population) in June 2011, according to Internet World Stats. (Internet World Stats, August 2011)
Internet use has strongly increased in Luxembourg in the last years and growth is continuing, according to the Portail des Statistiques du Grand- Duché de Luxembourg. 90% of the population in Luxembourg logged on to the internet during the last three months in Spring 2010. This is up from 86% in 2009, 81% in 2008 and 69% in 2005.
This level of 90% brings Luxembourg at the 2nd position in Europe in terms of internet adoption, just behind the Netherlands (at 91%). Former EU27 countries are all above the European average of 70% except for a few South European countries including Spain and Italy (59%), Portugal (54%) and Greece (46%) that are now lagging behind some of the new member states. At the bottom of the list are Romania (42%) and Bulgaria (33%).
82% of the population in Luxembourg connect to the internet daily or almost every day.
Almost all internet users have home internet access, while almost half have internet access at work. About 20% of internet users go online at friends/family's home and 12% at education places, while below 3% go online at cybercafés. Mobile connections via Hotspot or WiFi accounted for about 18% of internet users.

Households with children in Luxembourg are more likely to have internet than those without children with a rate of 98% compared to 87% respectively, according to the Portail des Statistiques du Grand- Duché de Luxembourg. Similarly, households on higher income are also more likely to be online than those on lower income with 7 out of 10 households on low income connected to the internet compared to 9 out of 10 among those on higher income. Half of internet users in Luxembourg have bought good/services online in the last three months as per the first quarter of 2010, according to the Portail des Statistiques du Grand- Duché de Luxembourg. Their findings also show that 14% bought online the most recently between 3months-12 months ago, while 6% more than a year ago. Accommodation booking (64%) was the second most popular type of good/services bought online by internet users in Luxembourg in 2010, just behind books/ebooks, magazines/newspapers (69%), according to the Portail des Statistiques du Grand- Duché de Luxembourg. Close to eight out of ten households (78%) in Luxembourg have broadband internet access of which DSL account for 70%, according to the Portail des Statistiques du Grand- Duché de Luxembourg. Almost all households in Luxembourg (99.4%) had at least one mobile phone in 2010, according to the Portail des Statistiques du Grand- Duché de Luxembourg.
Younger users in Luxembourg are more likely to use their mobile phone to go online than older users, according to the Portail des Statistiques du Grand- Duché de Luxembourg. 42% of internet users aged between 16-34 years old use their mobile phone to access to the internet, compared to 29% among those aged 35-54 years old and only 14% among those aged 55 years old and older.
