There were 16,147,000 internet users in Taiwan (representing 70.0% of the population) in June 2011, according to Internet World Stats. This represented 1.7% of the Asian population. (Internet World Stats, August 2011)

UGC and Social Networking

Many of the top markets for blog usage are in Asia. Global analysis of the blog category revealed that Taiwan ranked as the top market for blog category reach among its online population with 85.5% of internet users visiting blogs during June 2011, according to comScore Media Metric.  Taiwan was closely followed by Brazil (85.2% reach) and South Korea (84.9% reach).

Japan led all markets in blog engagement in June 2011, with the average visitor in Japan spending more than an hour (62.6 minutes) on blogs during the month. Hunting out the best deals is truly a global activity. In April 2011, Groupon reached more than 1 million unique visitors (age 15+ home/work location) in 12 markets across the globe. The US saw the largest audience reaching 10.4 million visitors, but Japan and Taiwan made the list of the top ten largest markets for Groupon reaching nearly 1.6 and 1.2 million visitors, respectively.

Broadband access

14.35 million internet users in Taiwan relied on broadband connections in March 2011, up 3.37% year on year, with a penetration rate of 70.58%, according to Taiwan Network Information Center (TWNIC)'s annual survey of broadband internet use. Mobile Devices

Mobile / Smartphones

In addition to broadband, 35.88% of internet users in Taiwan went online by wireless and 18.82% utilized mobile communications, according to Taiwan Network Information Center (TWNIC)'s annual survey of broadband internet use.

The recent popularity of smart handheld devices has helped connect more people to the internet and wireless penetration is likely to grow even higher in the future, according to Liang Te-hsin, associate professor in the Department of Statistics and Information at Fu Jen Catholic University.
