There were 9.7 million internet users in 2010 and according to Venezuela's Telecommunications commission, CONATEL, a third of the population is actively using internet and more than 95% have mobile phone lines.
Internet service in Venezuela rose by 43.16% in 2010, reaching over 9.7 users nationwide. Thirty-four out of every 100 Venezuelan citizens were using the internet vía DSL, Cable or wireless connections.
In Venezuela the use of internet is a matter of national interest. Infocenters, community spaces equipped with computers connected to the internet where users are allowed to access information technology for free, are one of the achievements of the Venezuelan government. Facebook.com reached 86.9% of all online users in Venezuela in June 2011, according to comScore's The Rise of Social Networking in Latin America Report. In fact, Venezuela ranked 9th in the top ten markets for Facebook.com penetration worldwide and 5th in Latin America. (comScore Data Mine, September 2011)
Venezuela ranked third (33.2%) in April 2011 in share of time spent on social networking properties across the world, according to comScore Media Metrix. This made Venezuela one of the most social media-addicted market globally, behind the Philippines (41.3%), and the Russian Federation (39.7%). (comScore Data Mine, June 2011)
Twitter.com reached 21.1% of all online users in Venezuela in December 2011, according to comScore Media Metrix. In fact, Venezuela ranked third in the top ten global markets for Twitter.com penetration worldwide, behind the Netherlands (22.3%), and Brazil (21.8%). (comScore Data Mine, February 2011)
